COMMON:DIFFERENT

“Common Different” Exhibition The Island Bristol Gallery Tues May 1st – Sat May 12th
Open daily 10am – 6pm

Sponsored by the Creative Innovation Centre CIC www.ciccic.co.uk

7 South West based artists have put together an exciting, engaging and eclectic exhibition at The Island Bristol Gallery between Tuesday 1st May to Saturday 12th May 2018 (10am to 6pm daily) with a private view on Wednesday 2nd May (6-9pm). All art lovers welcome

Each artist strives to be individual, to be different and to find their own creative voice. But in striving there is much they have in common – not least the motivation to be different. It is said it is ‘a common human desire to be different’. This oxymoron posed a challenge to this group of artists. In bringing together their different practices they are inviting their audience to enjoy what they have in COMMON and what is DIFFERENT.

There is something for everyone in this exhibition:

Janet Glynn Smith is a painter of expressive landscapes which challenges the viewer to see the world in a different way.

Mark Adkins has a reputation in advertising and marketing alongside his fine art work approach. His work for this exhibition is based our inherent need to vent our inner feelings through outward expression, even in the face of repression.

Andy Baker has been studying the male and female form, and in some cases abstracting the form. He experiments with various techniques from wax resist to conventional acrylic, conte, charcoal, I have also used household products such as hair gel boot polish washing liquid etc. and mixing them up to create mixed media and collage

Philip Barnes ARCA is a graduate of the Royal College of art who makes work using many media. The paintings on show take an enigmatic look at some universal themes often through a bold use of Christian iconography.

Jason Caplan is a brash New Yorker who paints both bold abstract and figurative works.

Richard Holt is a renowned designer and artist and he will be presenting a mix of design and fine art. He focuses on the infinite textural combinations created by the relationships of the materials.

Tudor Titzoiu “… His practice of abstraction goes further still, to the simplest fundamental elements of representation and perception, perhaps even of reality itself: colour and line. …”  art critic Ben Pritchett

At the private view there will be a music presentation by Dildar Singh of RVSP Bhangra Band and a poetry reading by Graeme Ryan* who often writes poetry in response to fine art. All the artists will be there to discuss their work if asked and there will be some of the artists present on each day of the exhibition.

All the artists have a strong social ethos and as part of the exhibition they are donating 10% of any sales to Dementia UK.

Entry to the exhibition is free.

Exhibition at The Island Bristol Gallery between Tuesday 1st May to Saturday 12th May 2018 (10am to 6pm daily)

  • Graeme Ryan is a playwright, poet and teacher based in Taunton. He has written extensively for young people and adults and has recently performed at both the Torbay and Teignmouth Poetry Festivals, the latter as a competition winner.
