The Sunday Big Band plays Mainly Sixties
What can I tell you about the Sixties?
nothing. i cant remember a thing. fortunately the music lives on and a golden age for crooners lives on in the music.
This month’s theme is the 60’s. In big band terms that means, some Soul music, and lots of groovy stuff like Take Five, Son of a Preacherman and Mercy Mercy Mercy. Buddy Rich had a lot of big band hits in the 60’s too, so we will be playing a few of his numbers as well. Things like Love for Sale, Big Swing Face and the Beatles’ tune Norwegian Wood (hint, his version is pretty full on!) Hannah DB is going to demand Respect as well as Lifting you higher and higher. There will be solos, there will be jazz. Should be fun.
Early warning for next month… On Sunday June 17 we are going to be doing an all Frank Sinatra programme with Chris Farey on vocals.
There will also be plenty of fine soloists giving you their version of the sound of the sixties. Who knows what will happen, but it should be good.
CICCIC have only got themselves a Big Band residency! How many places can you say that about?
Over the next 6 months from Jan to June on the 3rd Sunday of the month there is going to be one set from a 17 piece big band at lunchtime. Each month will be a different theme with different tunes. There is nothing wrong with Glenn Miller, but we are aiming to show the widest possible range of big band styles. The first two are ‘the Sunday Big Band plays Count Basie’ (Jan 21) and ‘the Sunday Big Band plays the Blues’. (Feb 18).
The Sunday Big Band is going to be a collaboration between different Big Band musicians. There is a jazz tradition of ‘workshopping’ tunes in public, but we are going to save you the workshopping and just bring you the good stuff.
3rd Sunday of the month.
