The Crystal Spring is a UK-based improvising duo who use British folksongs as the starting point for improvisation. The Crystal Spring was inspired by the aesthetic of Swedish jazz pianist Jan Johansson who pioneered this work with Swedish folksongs in the mid-1960s. in so far as the music is improvised around a song it could be called jazz, but the harmonic language is much simpler. In performance The Crystal Spring introduces each song with a description of the narrative found in the text together with a look at song’s origins.
The duo is led by Hywel Davies, composer, improviser and sound artist. The other half of The Crystal Spring is New Zealand-born double bass player Luke Belcher. Both players are accomplished improvisers and regulars on the South-West jazz scene.
Hywel’s works have been heard at Cheltenham, Lichfield and Spitalfields Festivals, as well as King’s Place in London; his installed works have been hosted by the National Truist (Mottisfont), b-side multimedia festival, the National Esiteddfod of Wales, New Greenham Arts and Tate Gallery Liverpool.
