Tim Hill Quartet
Tim Hill’s new group is a free-wheeling quartet featuring some of the South West’s finest players and based around the great drummer Tony Orrell The band has a rich repertoire, ranging through hymns, South African grooves, free bop and beyond. Inspired by the great piano less quartets of Ornette Coleman, Gerry Mulligan, William Parker et al, the bands line up is baritone/alto sax, trumpet, double bass and drums. Featured tonight will be several new tunes by local musician Tim that range from the wild and rhythmic to the lyrical. Nick Malcolm on trumpet is a highly regarded young musician last seen at the CIC in the band Moonlight Saving Time. Jazzwise called him …a supremely gifted musician…a trumpet player for the 21st century…wow!’
Nick is currently touring with folk star Eliza Carthy.
Dominic Lash on double bass is a highly flexible and expressive player recently heard on radio 3 playing James Tenney’s piece Beats for solo double bass. He leads his own quartet and regularly plays in Europe and the USA with leading improvisers like John Butcher, Steve Noble, Evan Parker and Alexander Hawkins and the composer Tony Conrad
“following in an illustrious lineage from Barry Guy through Simon Fell … breathtaking”
John Sharpe, All About Jazz
Tony Orrell is a Bristol legend and a regular sparring partner with city’s saxophonist Andy Sheppard. He can often be heard with the great free jazz saxophonist Paul Dunmall, in conductor Charles Hazlewood’s projects and with Goldfrapp’s Will Gregory, and has recorded with that band.
Tim will be mainly playing baritone saxophone.
An agile and imaginative soloist… he plays with a visceral power that is hard to resist www.thejazzmann.com
