Rod Higginson is a photographer who, after spending many years in London, moved to a new life in West Somerset, an area he describes as a corner of Paradise.
His images, shot mostly in black and white, and using only natural light where possible, reveal a wide range of subjects close to home. They include the sweeping landscapes of Exmoor, with its tiny ancient churches, its relics of rural and farming life, and its people at work, often in traditional occupations, in an age of rapid change. His current work develops the theme of human movement, chiefly contemporary dance and site-specific performance. Naturalistic images, unposed and fluid, aim to capture the grace and drama of dancers in action.
Somerset offers much to photographers and painters, frequently with familiar and colourful themes of moorland, wildlife and sea. Whilst remaining true to the timeless spirit of his adopted environment, Rod endeavours to capture the personal feeling contained in the image before him, and aims to convey an alternative, emotional view of this richly-varied area. The use of monochrome enhances the truthfulness of how he expresses this view.
