Jazz Night with Night Train – Friday April 15th

Evoking the many moods of the night, from wicked funk to evocative sound worlds, local band Night Train return to the CICCIC with a new line up featuring the keyboard player Mike Hurly. The band play a rich range of music from 30’s ballads through blues and Albert Ayler, to Marvin Gaye covers and contemporary jazz from the likes of Snarkey Puppy. They also play originals by band leader Tim Hill. Jazz with something of the night about it, warm and dark and full of grooves and passionate soloing.
New keyboard player Mike Hurly is a classical piano graduate of and teacher at the Birmingham Conservatoire, recently moved back to Somerset. A very experienced jazz player, he is also a composer writing for BBC radio and recently for film, his score for Paul Murphy’s ‘Nubskull’ was described by Radio 2’s Mark Radcliffe as
Original, thoughtful, elegiac, haunting and touching. With exquisitely judged performances the film’s skilfully sustained mood will stay with me for quite some time”.
As a musical director he has worked for renowned performers in many genres, notably reggae stars Susan Cadogan, Dawn Penn and Tippa Irie and radio award winner and folk star Jo Hamilton. Mike’s performances and compositions have been broadcast on Radio 3, Radio 4 and Radio 5 Live.

Night Train is led by Tim Hill, saxophonist, composer and bandleader whose playing encompasses street bands, free improvisation, grooves, composition, traditional music and creating music for outdoor theatre.
