Painters’ Progress is a Group of amateur artists and close friends based in the Taunton area who are committed to drinking coffee and supporting each other in developing and improving both artistic skills and knowledge and appreciation of historical developments in art.
The Group’s regular weekly meetings are based around a weekly “theme” or the work of a particular artist or technique introduced by one of us. Typically each member will present work based on the week’s theme, explain what they were aiming to achieve and then invite (always constructive) comment/advice from the rest of us. By this process, we have refined our individual and collective ability to analyse artistic success and learn lessons to incorporate into future work.
Amongst “themes” and artists chosen this year and on display in this exhibition have been Seasons, Paul Nash and Inspired by Words & Music.
In addition to its weekly meetings, Painters’ Progress also arranges regular “Plein Air” days during the summer – in our gardens or at local places of interest. This year, triggered by having a large plywood crate – just crying out to be painted – we experimented with working collaboratively on large garden panoramas which was both fun and rewarding as, with experience, we refined the process.
Another especially exciting development in 2024 was participating together in the “Abstracting the Wild Coast” course with Sam Boughton at Newlyn School of Art which opened our eyes to the challenge of using coloured inks to create dynamic sketches in the open air whilst also wrangling with paper, drawing boards and inks in a raging Atlantic storm.
We hope you enjoy our display of the results of another fulfilling year of artistic endeavour.
