The Sunday Big Band plays Count Basie
Count Basie. An icon of the Big Band era – he made a lot of fabulous music over the years. Some with a full throated roar like ‘One o‘Clock Jump’ or ‘April in Paris’- but at other times showing the restrained power of a massive engine just ticking over, like on ‘Lil Darlin’ or ‘Cute’.
Basie started in the swing era right at the beginning, in the 30’s, but he continued to prosper even when other big bands fell out of fashion in the 50’s. In fact his band hit another sweetspot at this time. Classics like Moon River, From Russia with Love, and Walk Don’t Run are from the 50’s and 60’s.
‘Sinatra at the Sands’ Frank’s great live album was recorded with Basie, and we will have Chris Franks sprinkle a few of those in our set. Songs like ‘Fly me to the moon’ and ‘I have got you under my skin’.
CICCIC have only got themselves a Big Band residency! How many places can you say that about?
Over the next 6 months from Jan to June on the 3rd Sunday of the month there is going to be one set from a 17 piece big band at lunchtime. Each month will be a different theme with different tunes. There is nothing wrong with Glenn Miller, but we are aiming to show the widest possible range of big band styles. The first two are ‘the Sunday Big Band plays Count Basie’ (Jan 21) and ‘the Sunday Big Band plays the Blues’. (Feb 18).
The Sunday Big Band is going to be a collaboration between different Big Band musicians. There is a jazz tradition of ‘workshopping’ tunes in public, but we are going to save you the workshopping and just bring you the good stuff.
3rd Sunday of the month.
