After the highly enjoyable open mic of our first event of 2019, Fire River Poets are delighted to welcome our first guest for the year, Jean Sprackland, who will read for us on Thursday 7 February 2019. Jean is a well known figure on the poetry ‘circuit’ locally and nationally. Chairman of Fire River Poets, John Stuart, said ‘Jean is a poet of precision and graceful cadences. An acute observer of the world around us – and of us humans with our loves and griefs.’ We are guaranteed an evening of thought provoking and absorbing poetry.
Jean Sprackland has published five poetry collections, most recently Green Noise, and her book Tilt was the winner of the Costa Poetry Award in 2008. She is also the author of Strands: A Year of Discoveries on the Beach, which won the Portico Prize for Non-Fiction in 2012. Jean is Professor of Creative Writing at Manchester Metropolitan University, and Chair of the Poetry Archive.
‘Jean Sprackland’s poems are an uncommon pleasure to read. They are defined by their hospitable grace. Sprackland has been highly regarded from the start of her career perhaps because she makes the reader welcome… she deserves to become a household name’. – Kate Kellaway, The Observer
‘Sprackland likes to read the sign language of the natural world… These poems are exact and well made, their lightness of touch often given drive by a fierce vocabulary.’ – Peter Scupham, Literary Review
‘In Sprackland’s poems, the sounds of words, how they feel in the mouth, point to an intimacy with their physicality and internal music… she is alive to the way words seduce us with their meaning, where nothing is ever fully disclosed.’ – Owen Gurrey, The London Magazine
