The Little Big Ho
rns are a 6 piece funky brass band featuring great local musicians. Infectious riffs, rich tunes and wild solos combine in the bands mix of contemporary New Orleans brass, Ska and Reggae. Up front and danceable, the band runs on the pumping rhythm section of drummer Mike Hurley and tuba player Tom Francombe. The band is inspired by modern New Orleans bands like the Hot 8 brass band and other contemporary brass bands like Lucky Chops and The Hypnotic Brass Band. They also dip into New Orleans jazz history and play tunes by Duke Ellington and Charlie Mingus.
The band features Dan Pogorzelski saxophone star of the big band Def Tone 17 and often heard at the CIC with his own quartet. Brian Pearson and Joe Porter are also in Def Tone and The Big Noise street band. Drummer Mike Hurley is a graduate of Birmingham Conservatory and a highly experienced band leader, pianist and drummer who played in the band The Destroyers and with reggae stars Susan Cadogan and Tippa Irie. Tuba player Tom Francombe was in the National Youth Orchestra and has been a featured soloist with many local orchestras, brass and wind bands. The band is completed by Tim Hill on baritone sax, Tim plays at the CIC in many guises including Night Train with Mike Hurley.
