Mike Hanny the Artist will be giving a talk on Sat 27th Feb @ 3pm about his Brilliant Corners Exhibition 15th Feb to 11th March – All welcome
Mike Hanny is an artist who lives and breathes Plymouth. He studied on a BA in Fine Art at Plymouth University and set up his studio in the City painting the subjects around him as well as lecturing at the nearby Plymouth Art School.
The following words describes Mike’s passion and inspiration for his work:
The city is my work.
A certain, empty capsule of time.
That early hour after the streets have cleared yet before the whole machine fires up again for another commercial spree.
I live right on the edge of a mainly empty square of city centre concrete which never sleeps, just watching out with its electric eyes.
A double edged sword. One side, the glaring shop windows, brilliant colours, clever dioramas with intelligent lighting. The other, a monster with dark adjacents, lurking silent, inviting the unwary to enter, catnapping with one eye open for the misguided step. The dystopian nightmare of the architect’s dream.
So how does the artist deal with such an overwhelming confection of every hard facet of inner city living? The surfaces, the social problems, the pollution, the endless litter and the seemingly brainless decisions of the puffed up planners and of course the noise.
I find solace in the silence of early morning spaces which I wouldn’t dare enter without my dog.
I have the short time between 4 and 6 am before the whole thing the sparks up, to sit and imagine.
I’ve spent most of my life in commercial art doing every job that came in the door from ‘keep out’ signs for building firms through illustration work and printing to architect’s scale models.
So when an idea flashes in front of my eyes I imagine solutions in both elevation and plan.
I don’t take photographs or sit and draw preferring to unload my back brain in the evenings with books full of automatic mark making. Sooner or later something clicks.
The city…….Down and dirty as Rock and Roll.
Mike will be exhibiting his work at the Creative Innovation Centre, Paul Street Taunton from 17th February to the 11th March. The exhibition is open to the public Monday to Saturday 9.30 am – 5pm .
