27Thursday 18th Feb 7.30pm-10.00pm. £4 per session.
Creative jazz and improvisation sessions in a sympathetic environment. Led by expert jazz musician and teacher Charlie Hearnshaw.
Jazz is massive scene worldwide but also a genre of music where standards and improvisation blend and musicians create new and exciting work. That’s why you are invited to this Jazz Jam and Workshop so you can extend your musical skills and learn from a skilled jazz professional.
The emphasis is on playing some nice music together and having fun. Along the way we hope to learn more about jazz and improvisation.
Workshop leader Charlie Hearnshaw invites musicians of all ages and abilities to come and play some good music.
The sessions will comprise a jazz workshop followed by a jam session.
The Workshop
The session will begin with a workshop. We will rehearse written arrangements of standards and original tunes prior to playing them in the jam session.
We may also devise some head arrangements.
Also up for discussion will be approaches to improvisation.
Instrumental technique may also feature; Charlie plays clarinet, sax and piano.
Please bring manuscript paper, a sharp B or 2B pencil and a rubber. You may download manuscript paper (.pdf) here.
Jam Session
The jam session will feature pieces we have rehearsed during the workshop alongside jazz standards and blues.
Each jam session will also feature half a dozen jazz pieces and Charlie will put scores online so that jammers may practice the pieces in advance. He will put the scores online by the end of December (2015) and jammers will be able to access them from Charlie’s website www.charliesax.co.uk
Jammers may also bring pieces of their own choice of course. Please bring chord sheets or charts (dots) for the rhythm section if you can. Please bring Eb and Bb parts too if you have them but if you don’t have either, come and jam anyway.
