Painters’ Progress is a Group of amateur artists and friends based in the Taunton area who are committed to cake, coffee and supporting each other in developing and improving both our artistic skills and knowledge of historical developments in art.
The Group’s regular weekly meetings are based around a weekly artistic technique, a “theme” or the work of a particular artist. Typically, at each weekly get together, each artist presents their work based on the week’s subject, explains what they aimed to achieve and invites comment from the rest of the group. By this process, we have refined our individual and collective ability to analyse artistic success, learned from each other and benefitted from advice to incorporate into future work – always with the aim to improve – to “progress”.
Amongst “themes”, artists and techniques chosen in 2025 have been Winter, Inside to Outside, Paul Klee, Raoul Dufy and the Fauves. We also ventured for a few weeks into Urban Sketching which resulted in a large collaborative work focussed on the fascinating architectural diversity in Taunton’s buildings – this will be a highlight of our 2025 exhibition. In other weeks we have refreshed our approach by experimenting with unfamiliar techniques/materials including Ink and Wash and Spray Cans
In addition to its weekly meetings, Painters’ Progress also arranges regular “Plein Air” days during the summer – in our gardens or at local places of interest. There have also been visits to exhibitions and galleries with the Vam Gogh show at the National Gallery a particular highlight.
We are very proud of the artistic progress we have made in 2025 and hope you enjoy our exhibition which will be open on Wednesdays to Thursdays 10-4pm and Fridays and Saturdays 10-1pm from 12th November until 6th December.
In particular there will be a opportunity to meet us all and to talk about our approach at the Opening Night on Thursday 13th November.
