Metamorphosis – Exhibition by the Kiln Formed Glass club. Open to the public Tues- Sat 10 – 4pm ( Except Friday pm)

Journeys from Maker to Artist

Preview night – Wed 1st Sept  6-9pm – All art and glass lovers welcome

The Kiln Formed Glass Club is a group of glass makers from all over the UK, who have been meeting up regularly at a glass studio in Ilminster (Glassification) since 2015.

2 years ago 7 decided to explore what their work might look like if they took an artist’s route to making, rather than their previous makers route.

So started a journey which has taken them through emotional exploration, technical challenges and growth, both as people and artists.

The 7 makers started by defining their own understanding of the difference between art and craft “when we make craft, we design and make with a final (usually practical) product in mind, starting with an understanding of and technical competence in the material to be used.. in this case glass.

However when we make art, we start with an inquiry, a message we want to share, something we want to say. We try then to find a way to express that in glass.

A well crafted piece is a thing of beauty, and can be replicated, and often needs to be.

Art is not always beautiful, and cannot, nor should it be

The difference is not in value, or skill, or competence, simply the journey and process.”

This exhibition represents the member’s own individual journeys towards becoming artists, and is for most the first time they have exhibited. The work is as diverse as the members of the group themselves, from exploring the beauty of orchids, of the Somerset Levels, of insects, to what it means to survive breast cancer.

There are a number of works available for sale and a list of works and brief description available on request at the cafe/bar.

The artists showing are as follows.

Liz Sparkes

Monica Garcia-Alonso

Nicola Wakley

Tina Easton

Caroline Slark

Linzi Wetherell

Jane Connell

The venue does run a number of workshops during the week so it is advisable if you are travelling a long way to check beforehand on our calendar.
