Philip Clouts Trio
The trio CD ‘Direction South’ from the pianist Philip Clouts (renowned for his work with worldbeat jazz band ZubopGambia) has received great acclaim.
Jazz UK described it as ‘enormously enjoyable … accessible but distinctive’ and Chris Parker praised his “deft, lively, intensely rhythmic piano.”
He plays a set of original material, influenced by Latin and African jazz and New Orleans funk, creating music with a groove.
Philip Clouts’ career has included playing at Ronnie Scotts, Birmingham Symphony Hall and Glastonbury and Womad festivals, and his music has recently been played on BBC Radio 2’s Jamie Cullum Show.
- “It has a very infectious feel-good quality about it” Jazz FM
- Although clearly steeped in the music of his native South Africa, Clouts touches numerous other bases, and his deft, lively, intensely rhythmic piano is skilfully complemented throughout by a vigorous but sensitive rhythm section.” Jazz Review
- “The trio…cook up some nice, tricky rhythms to keep you alert, and control an impressive range of dynamics. Clouts has particularly subtle judgement when it comes to harmonising simple melodies, making them neither too bare nor over-elaborate” The Observer
